William H. Payton, 91, Decatur, Ill., a former Logansport resident, died at 3 a.m. Sunday in Decatur. He had been a member of the Baptist Temple for the past 59 years. A retired Penn Central Railroad engineer, he was born Jan. 1, 1878, in Crawfordsville, the son of David and Martha Stump Payton. His wife, the former Bertha Lennon, is deceased. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Shafer, E. Moline, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Ada Middleton, Crawfordsville; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the McCloskey-Hamilton-Kahle Funeral Home with Dr. E. Clyde Mayfield officiating. Burial will be in the Camden Cemetery. William H. Payton, city native, died Sunday in Decatur, Ill. Mr. Payton, 91, a longtime resident of Logansport, is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ada Middleton of Crawfordsville. He was a retired engineer of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Mr. Payton visited here frequently, and in addition to his sister, is survived by nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the McCluskey Funeral Home, Logansport.
